The MinnowBoard.org Foundation is a US-based non-profit founded to promote the education, design, and use of open source software and hardware in embedded computing using Intel Architecture. MinnowBoard.org provides a forum for developers of open source software and open source hardware to exchange ideas, knowledge and experience.

MinnowBoard supports the Open Source Hardware Association statement of principle 1.0:

inline
"Open source hardware is hardware whose design is made publicly available so that anyone can study, modify, distribute, make, and sell the design or hardware based on that design. The hardware’s source, the design from which it is made, is available in the preferred format for making modifications to it. Ideally, open source hardware uses readily-available components and materials, standard processes, open infrastructure, unrestricted content, and open-source design tools to maximize the ability of individuals to make and use hardware. Open source hardware gives people the freedom to control their technology while sharing knowledge and encouraging commerce through the open exchange of designs.”

MinnowBoard boards also comply with the OSHWA Open Source Hardware Definition.

MinnowBoard.org is the result of a spirited collection of Intel employees working on the open source Yocto Project who also wanted to create powerful, open, and embedded devices using Intel Architecture. Currently, Intel Corporation’s John Hawley is the MinnowBoard Evangelist and along with an Intel Corporation team, is focused full time on growing the MinnowBoard community and ecosystem. MinnowBoard.org invites you to join the MinnowBoard.org community and its growing ecosystem by creating derivative boards, specialty boards, lures, projects, forums, and related endeavors which can be documented here on our wiki

The initial MinnowBoard MAX was a major redesign by CircuitCo (out of Richardson, TX USA) of an Intel design which had been released to CircuitCo with a freely adoptable license. CircuitCo is the manufacturer of the MinnowBoard MAX and they assume all costs of, and derive all royalties from, the sale of the MinnowBoard MAX boards.

Compliant (royalty) and Compatible (logo) programs exist and we invite you to participate by contacting our Business Director; MinnowBoard.org Foundation requests contact and approval before considering the use of the MinnowBoard name on any products. The MinnowBoard.org Foundation participates as a mentoring organization for Google Summer of Code which pays a small fee for mentoring students. Usability support for MinnowBoard.org boards comes from the development community accessible through channels such as Google+ and the mailing list. Hardware support is the responsibility of the manufacturer.

MinnowBoards are low-cost, fan-less single-board computers specifically designed for the embedded market. The MinnowBoard is a compact and affordable open source hardware reference platform that puts the power of a 64-bit Intel® Atom™ E38xx Series SoC in a small versatile form-factor. This embedded board has an enormous range of capabilities for hardware, software, and firmware developers: from creating a fun hobby or professional maker project, to developing high performance embedded applications or products. The MinnowBoard MAX is designed to offer exceptional performance, flexibility, openness, and standards, which means most operating systems such as Linux*, Android* and Windows* will “just run” on a MinnowBoard.
